What is
LEGO® Based Therapy?
LEGO Based Therapy is a social development program that uses LEGO themed activities to support children and young people’s social awareness and confidence. LEGO Based Therapy provides many benefits for children who may experience difficulty communicating in a social setting where expectations or rules of behaviour may not be clear or are unspoken.
Many members who complete a term of LEGO Club season experience increased social communication and competencies, including:
- Perspective taking – understanding others’ needs, sharing resources, turn-taking
- Oral language – listening for understanding, and speaking to share meaning
- Collaborative partnerships – relying on others, taking responsibility and leadership
- Learning from others – asking and offering assistance, self-advocacy
How does LEGO Club at FIM differ from some other social or play groups?
LEGO Club at FIM is founded upon a strengths-based model of participation. All members’ neurotypes are accepted and interpersonal difficulties due to a mismatch between neurotype differences and their social environment. We don’t promote masking behaviour as evidence of a skill. Instead, we foster problem-solving strategies where each member is encouraged to share their perspective and in turn, to reciprocate with their team mates in the same way, facilitating mutual growth.
LEGO Club operates as a group program with six children in each session. LEGO Club facilitators (or Team Leaders) are qualified allied health staff who practise at Futures in Mind. All children applying for LEGO Club are individually assessed to ensure they will benefit from the program and are carefully matched with other children for the best therapeutic outcomes and enjoyment across the duration of the LEGO Club term.

How to apply for your child to join LEGO Club
Applicants who have participated in LEGO Club at FIM will be expediated for a desktop assessment and will be contacted by FIM to confirm their placement. All new applicants to Futures in Mind/or LEGO Club at FIM will be required to attend a brief assessment with their parent/carer to ensure they will benefit from LEGO Club.
Please note that completing an application does not guarantee a place in the LEGO Club group program. All applicants for LEGO Club will be assessed before being placed in a group to ensure they will benefit from the group and will contribute to the positive experience of other LEGO Club members.
Once a child has been accepted into the program it is expected that (short of unforeseen circumstances) members will attend all 8 LEGO Club sessions. Each Team in LEGO Club is a closed therapeutic group therefore it is not possible for other children to join a Team once applications have closed.
